However, municipalities in the Brazilian Amazon have 1 million people who do not have access to electricity or who has access to it during only a few hours a day, through generators.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, as they are not included in the National Interconnected System (NIS), other 3 million people in the region need to be supplied by diesel-powered thermoelectric plants, which are more expensive and more polluting options.<\/p>\n<p>The delicate supply of electricity has consequences for the economic development of the region. According to a survey by Imazon (Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amaz\u00f4nia), member of OCAA (Amazon Observatory on Trade and Environment), the underutilization of certain production chains means that the region participates in only 0.17% of the cocoa, black pepper, fish and other \u201cforest products\u201d market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Due to its hydroelectric plants, the Amazon region generates 26% of all electricity consumed in the Brazilian territory.
