Using gross ecosystem product (GEP) to value nature in decision making

The study presents an alternative to GDP, the gross ecosystem product (GEP), which summarizes the value of ecosystem services in a single monetary metric. In the study, the GEP measurement was carried out in the Chinese province of Qinghai, known as the “Water Tower of Asia” for providing important ecosystem services to the continent. showing that the approach is tractable using existing data. In the future, China is expected to use the GEP in decision-making in a variety of ways, as part of a transformation to inclusive green growth. This includes investing in the conservation of ecosystem assets to ensure the provision of ecosystem services through cross-regional compensation payments.
