“According to the European Union’s environment commissioner, Virginijus Sinkevicius, the environmental concerns that prevent a free trade agreement with Mercosur could be resolved by the end of the year.
Previously, European ambassadors have said the agreement will only be ratified unless environmental protection measures are taken to stop the increasing destruction of the Amazon rainforest.
Sinkevicius says that the ambassador’s concerns have been raised with Brazil’s environment minister and lawmakers about a bill pending in the country’s Congress that would open up protected indigenous lands to commercial mining. In addition, an addendum must be made to the 2019 agreement, including a series of environmental safeguards, targets and requirements.”
