Filmmaker Richard Curtis, screenwriter of “Notting Hill” and founder of the Make My Money Matter (MMMM) campaign, warned that the pension industry should be “put on red alert” as a new report says billions of UK savers are funding deforestation.

In Britain, 20% of pension investments are linked to forestry pensions, totaling around £300 billion in UK pension money, according to research.

Most of this deforestation is driven by markets that need forest land commodities such as palm oil, soy and beef cattle, according to a joint report by MMMM, Global Canopy and Systemiq. “This is bad for the planet, risky for investor values and against UK savers,” Curtis said.
