The demand for extremely light wood, stimulated by the growing market for wind turbine blades in Europe, has created a new market for deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. Each turbine blade needs about 150 cubic meters of wood to be built and the raft, due to its flexibility and quality, is the main material used.
In Ecuador, indigenous territories with a great abundance of ferries have been cut by roads and infrastructure in preparation for the demand created by the European Green Deal, which aims to reverse climate change through the energy transition.
The growing interest in wind energy, together with the lack of inspection, stimulated extraction and deforestation and degraded forests in the Achuar indigenous territory. In response, indigenous leaders have organized protests and denounced the destruction of biodiversity and the disrespect for traditional peoples caused by the exploitation of the material.
