Farmers caught by Ibama deforesting the Amazon received public funding at subsidized interest to buy tractors and other agricultural machinery, despite having a history of environmental infractions. A total of US$ 5,7 million was lent to five producers.

The loans were granted by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and operated by the John Deere bank, which is the financial arm of the machinery manufacturer that controls it – and which sold the equipment.

A resolution by the Central Bank of Brazil prohibits the granting of rural credit to properties in the Amazon that are subject to embargoes, but does not impose restrictions on the owners of these areas to obtain loans for other farms.
