The state of Pará represents 47.15% of the national production of cocoa. Of the 250 thousand hectares cultivated, 80% are in agroforestry systems (SAFs), which has contributed to the reduction of deforestation and fires in the Amazon.

The finding comes from an unprecedented study by Embrapa Amazônia Oriental to map the cocoa-growing areas in the state. Adriano Venturieri, a researcher at Embrapa, says that the consortium between crops and trees tends to intensify in Pará, as it is proof of income generation with the forest standing.

Based on data from Inpe, it was possible to observe that 99.54% of the mapped areas do not present problems in relation to protected areas. Only 0.46% of the 70 thousand hectares of cocoa in the state are present in Environmental Preservation Areas (APA), which allow productive activities.
