Report points out that the Brazil nuts production could have a more solid foundation and contribute more to sustainable Amazonian development, generating more income and promoting quality of life for traditional forest communities.
Data collected by a survey by the Center for Remote Sensing at UFMG, published in 2017, point to an annual production potential for Brazil nuts in the order of 3.7 million tons per year. However, in 2018, official figures show that there was a production of only 34,200 tons of nuts.
In terms of exports and international market share for Brazil nuts, Brazil lags behind Bolivia, a country with an smaller economy and a smaller harvest area.
