According to data from the report published by the World Economic Forum, US$ 31 trillion from cities is at risk due to losses of nature and biodiversity. The amount represents 44% of the world’s GDP.
According to the survey, the main threats would be the result of failures in climate action that can harm the economy of municipalities around the world. Specialists also highlighted that biodiversity, in addition to acting positively on water cycles and flood regulation, supports the production of energy, food and medicines.
The document cites a series of impacts caused by the climate change and the disorderly expansion of urban centers that should become more costly in the coming years. Financial damage related to sea flood risk, for example, could quadruple by 2050. This equates to an increase from US$ 35 billion per year to US$ 140 billion per year.
