According to a report published on February 22nd by the Articulation of the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib), the NGO Amazon Watch and the Amazon Minada Project, large investment managers heavily finance mining companies that are destroying indigenous territories in the Amazon.

A total of 20 investment institutions, including BlackRock and Capital Group, allocated a total of US$ 54,1 billion to nine mining conglomerates – including Vale, Anglo American, Belo Sun, AngloGold Ashanti and Rio Tinto – between 2016 and October 2021, according to the report. Black Rock alone invested US$ 6,2 billion in mining companies.

These mining companies have submitted thousands of requests to the National Mining Agency (ANM) for prospecting in areas that overlap with indigenous reserves and fully protected conservation units in the Amazon.
