According to a study published by the Environmental Research Letters, the Brazilian area that could be legally deforested is equivalent to about 70 million hectares of native vegetation. The destruction of this area, which is twice the territory of Germany, would release almost 6 billion tons of carbon.
The researchers also alert to the possibility of relaxing environmental laws in Brazil, which would increase a highly vulnerable area. Therefore, the authors of the study defended the adoption of measures to end legal, legalizable and illegal deforestation in Brazil.
European politicians have also called for zero deforestation. They have been considerig to boycott commodities related to deforestation after the end of 2020.
