A study by Imazon shows that the most deforested municipalities in the Amazon region are also the ones with the worst quality of life indicators. The project analyzed the Social Progress Index (SPI) in the 772 municipalities of the Legal Amazon to demonstrate the relationship between deforestation and mining with poverty and inequality.
According to researchers, this is a vicious cycle in which the destruction of natural resources generates violence, concentration of income, worsens living conditions and alienates investors.
Wealth generation has been often used by businessmen, politicians and members of the federal government as a justification to avoid strong actions against environmental crimes.
