The largest responsible for deforestation in the Amazon is taking the forest to a point of total protection. Scientists warn that the constant destruction of a native forest can lead to vast and irreversible biome death.
However, according to the Washington Post’s investigation, the devastation of the world’s largest rainforest has also been driven by U.S. consumption and connivance.
Since the U.S. government lifted the moratorium on raw Brazilian beef over food safety concerns, the U.S. is set to become its second largest buyer. The country bought more than 320 million pounds of Brazilian beef last year – and is on track to buy nearly twice as much this year.
The biggest supplier is beef giant JBS, a company that controls some of the top U.S. business networks and, since 2009, has been repeatedly accused by environmentalists of purchased beef raised on illegally deforested land.
