The government backed down after criticism from the National Mining Agency, Funai and ICMBio. Gold mining would take place in one of the best preserved regions of the Amazon, which is also home to 23 indigenous ethnic groups.

Exploitation had been released by the chief minister of the Institutional Security Office of the Presidency of the Republic, General Augusto Heleno. Permits granted mining companies rights to search for gold in different areas of interest in the region known as the Dog’s Head.

The Public Ministry of Amazonas opened an investigation procedure to analyze the origin and legality of the authorization granted by Heleno due to socio-environmental risks. MPs suspect that the permits are intended to prepare the ground to allow mining in indigenous reserves in the Amazon.
