Often associated with problems related to animal welfare and the use of natural resources, the bovine leather production chain has intensified the search for sustainable production techniques.
With boycotts and selling under pressure, the non-profit organization Textile Exchange and its Leather Impact Accelerator (LIA) program created a market-inspired model of carbon credits that will be tested over the next three years in Brazil, on properties in the Amazon and Cerrado.
The practice consists of generating a credit for each animal kept for one year on farms with good environmental practices. In all, 30,000 of the 42,000 available credits have already been negotiated.
