A new investigation by Earth Sight, a London-based environmental group, has established a link between European supermarket chains, fast food and pet food brands with the 9,700-hectare Brasília do Sul farm, which has accumulated allegations of abuse and persecution of indigenous people in Mato Grosso do Sul. In 1950, the farm’s lands were home to a group of Guarani-Kaiowá indigenous people, who were expelled from the region.

According to the report, large fast food companies such as KFC; some of the main British supermarkets, such as Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Iceland; and the feed sold in Germany by major retailers are made with chicken fed by soybeans produced by Brasília do Sul.

Delara Burkhardt, rapporteur for the Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, said the report demonstrates the need to adopt rules against “imported” deforestation and called for land use and conversion to be part of the Union’s future anti-deforestation rule.
