Besides being the main producer of grains and owner of the largest cattle herd in the country, the State of Mato Grosso also leads the Brazilian production of native, legal and certified wood in private areas through the Sustainable Forest Management (SFM). Concentrated in the Amazonian biome found in the state, the practice aims to combine controlled cutting of trees and sustainable growth in the region.
The segment is the main sector of the economy of 44 municipalities in the north of Mato Grosso. It occupied 4.7 million hectares in 2021 and currently employs around 90,000 people. The goal is to reach 6 million hectares managed by 2030, an advance that can be accelerated with the financial returns achieved with the increase in demand and the appreciation of products.
Between 200,000 to 350,000 hectares are currently exploited every year in the legal reserve areas of private farmer properties. In the Amazonian biome, 80% of farms have to be preserved and 20% can be used for regular farming.
