The production chain for leather from cattle, and wool from sheep is a big source of deforestation. It also presents major biological risk to human health.
However, in the near future, trendy biomaterials made from plant leaves, fruit residues and lab-grown microorganisms could replace animal-derived textiles, including leather, fur, wool and silk. With initial implementation on a small scale, but rapid expansion, these chains have expanded and reached a global scale.
In less than a decade, dozens of startups have emerged focused on the development of a range of biomaterials that, in addition to eliminating the use of products of animal origin, incorporate sustainable practices into their production chains.
