If the definition of forest used by FAO is adopted by the European Union in the implementation of its policies to combat deforestation, more than 3 million km² of native vegetation in South America could be vulnerable to deforestation.
According to the analysis by MapBiomas, at least 16% of the Amazon would be exposed to forest destruction. In the Caatinga, more than 90% would not have any protection. In the Pantanal and Cerrado, about 70% of their areas do not fit this definition.
For FAO, forest is a type of land whose tree cover density index is greater than 10%, with a surface greater than 0.5 hectare and trees with a minimum height of 5 meters when mature. However, many ecosystems do not fit this restrictive concept.
