Norway’s Minister of Environment and Climate, Espen Barth Eide, said the country would be ready to resume payments to Brazil to prevent deforestation in the Amazon if there is a change of government in the October elections.
Between 2008 and 2018, Norway paid US$1.2 billion to the Amazon Fund, which finances prevention, monitoring and combating deforestation in Brazil, being by far its biggest donor. However, the fund was frozen in 2018 due to the significant increase in biome destruction rates.
