French environmental entities appealed this Friday for the Emmanuel Macron government to take action against deforestation in the Amazon. This would involve adopting stricter rules for the import of agricultural products and blocking the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union (EU).
Presidents of ten NGOs, including the French sections of WWF and Greenpeace, signed an open letter in the newspaper Le Monde. They recall that, in the first half of this year, deforestation in the Amazon increased by 17% compared to the same period in 2020. And they claim that, last year, the destruction of more than 310,000 km2 of forest had “the guarantee of President Jair Bolsonaro “.
