The Portuguese presidency of the EU Council will try until the last day to “encourage the European Commission” to formulate concrete proposals for Mercosur partners on “clarifications” to the negotiated trade agreement, guaranteed the head of diplomacy.
Speaking to journalists after participating in a Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, during which the trade agreement with Mercosur was discussed in the context of the broader discussion on the EU’s relationship with Latin America, Portuguese minister Augusto Santos Silva revealed that he has returned to defend today to their counterparts that it is now up to the Europeans to tell their Latin American partners what additional commitments they want, once they have already shown openness.
