Argonauts of the Amazon: River Trade and Rights in the Xingu Basin

The study analyzes the river trade of the ‘regatões’ on the Iriri River, located in the city of Altamira (State of Pará, Brazil), focusing on the interaction between riverside communities and the extra-economic relations created in this process. The research identifies monetary, moral and emotional commitments that lead the relationship between riverside merchants. It also assesses this connection as a sustainable alternative to deforestation and urban violence in the region.
