Social Progress Index in the Brazilian Amazon (IPS Amazônia 2021)

A study by Imazon analyzes the Social Progress Index (SPI) of the Amazon region, based on the understanding that development measures based only on economic indicators are insufficient to understand the socioeconomic structure of the region. The new IPS Amazônia 2021 brings together a set of 45 social and environmental indicators organized into 12 components and presents indices at the state and municipal scale. The IPS Amazônia 2021 revealed that deforestation is harmful to social progress – according to the study, the 20 municipalities with the largest areas of forest destroyed in the last three years had an average IPS of 52.38, 21% lower than the index in Brazil, 63.29, and lower than that of the Amazon, 54.59.
