How much forest was lost in 2021?


The report analyzes the deforestation rates of tropical forests in the last year. According to the researchers, of the 11 million hectares deforested, 3.75 million occurred in primary tropical forests. Researchers point out these areas as fundamental for carbon storage and biodiversity.

The loss of tropical primary forests in 2021 also resulted in 2.5 Gt of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to India’s annual fossil fuel emissions.
