Acre is one of the least deforested regions in Brazil. Although it represents a small area of Brazil, its geographical position and the fact that it has 80% of its native forest still preserved make it an important center of natural preservation.

Despite this, livestock farming has expanded rapidly in the state, which already has four times more cattle than humans. Motivated by the high international demand, the extremely fast expansion has been threatening traditional communities and forests in the region with deforestation and land grabbing.

In addition, the allocation of land for livestock has hampered the trade in sustainable forest products, such as certain types of wood, fruits and medicinal plants. Despite a report issued by the state’s data analysis system, which classifies the economic potential of natural resources as “immeasurable, it is livestock that has commanded land use in the region.
