Several ministers of agriculture of the European Union advocate to expand the list of commodities banned from entering the European market due to linkages to deforestation and forest degradation.

In its proposal made in November 2021, the European Commission listed six commodities to be targeted, but at a meeting yesterday of agriculture ministers, Belgium requested that the environmental impact of sugarcane be assessed sugar.

Brazil is the world’s largest producer and exporter of sugar, being sugarcane plantations mainly in the Southeast and Northeast regions. The new blockade tends to increase the pressure on Brazilian exports in the near future.
