EU Proposes Banning Imports of Soy and Beef Linked to Deforestation

The European Commission is considering banning the import of agribusiness products, such as soy and beef, linked to deforestation and forest degradation. As a way to circumvent vague environmental legislation, the agency also proposes that the rule may apply to the cutting of trees considered legal in the countries of origin.

During COP26, the largest meat exporters in Brazil presented their traceability models, but were criticized for not following up on their indirect suppliers.

The expansion of agricultural land destined for the production of commodities imported by developed countries is currently the main reason for deforestation and forest degradation.
