Using MapBiomas land cover and use data in the Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Chaco, Cerrado, Caatinga, Pampa and Pantanal Biomas, this technical note assesses the percentage of natural ecosystems that would not be protected by European regulation in South America, if the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) definition of “forest” is the only one considered.
